Pasto Carnival

Hi, it’s me Marimonda!

Today, I’d like to take you to Blacks and Whites’ Carnival (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos) in Pasto. It is one of the biggest carnivals in Colombia, still it is mainly celebrated by the local. Compared to Nice Carnival where I went last year, Pasto Carnival seemed more things to see and do but a bit less-organized which made it more amusing.

The carnival usually begins at the last week in December to the first weekend in January. This year, it was held from 28th December to 6th January. Since the last day of the Carnival is the most important day, if it’s your first time to Pasto I recommend you get the ticket for the last day.

You can book the ticket via its official website. The price of tickets varies depending on the day and it’s not cheap. I bought the ticket for 90,000 cop (about 25 dollars). Make sure you arrive to Pasto in advance to get the real ticket.

When I booked the ticket, I only received an email of confirmation. However, there was no information on the seat or where to get the ticket. Thus, I had to call to Corpocarnaval (the organization). If you don’t speak Spanish, it could be an hassle. The staff told me I could get the ticket onsite, so there was nothing to worry about.

But, my bus had been delayed so I had to pick up my ticket on the day of Carnival. When I ran to the office, there was no one who knew what was going on with my ticket. They called each other, and in the end I got a seat in the section of one sponsor company.

Actually, the seat was great. They offered free drinks (water and alcohol), snacks and some props like colored papers and black ink to participate the festival. There was even a band that played music during waiting time. But it took me about an hour to get a seat.

The carnival lasted about more than three hours. It was quite long, but there were many things to see. Seeing people spraying foam each other or throwing powder was also very fun. It was like a mixture of carnival and holi.

I didn’t buy the foam spray, but I should have. I was an easy target since I didn’t have anything to rebut. You would easily see people equipped with goggles to protect their eyes from strangers’ attack. Though the carnival was over in the afternoon, the concert at the carnival plaza was continued until the night.

I got a hotel in the plaza, so I could enjoy the rest of the festival on the rooftop. For me, it was a great choice since I didn’t want to dirt more my outfits. During the day, it was okay because many people focused more on the Carnival parade, but at night people got crazy and it was hard to see the people with clean clothing.

Although I had a slight issue with my seat in the morning, the carnival was amazing. It can be one of the world class festival in my opinion. The weather was perfect, people were happy and it seemed they really enjoyed the festival.
