Hi, it’s me Marimonda!
Today, I’d like to introduce Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (The middle of the world: official website) in Pinchicha province near Quito. It’s one of the most touristic places in Quito. You can take a bus from Quito to here ($0.25) or take a cab or Uber. From downtown I paid $14.7 to here.
Ciudad Mitad del Mundo
This place was defined by a French expedition team in 18th century. Thus, you can see many statues of french people in the center. In Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, I could find the yellow line(The latitude 0º0’0″) easily crossing the place. The line divides the two hemisphere of the Earth.
How to get there
The entrance is $5. You can book a shuttle bus to return to the city from $5 (depending on your stop)and it runs every hour. If you’re more than two, taking a cab is cheaper than the shuttle. However, the local bus stop is also just in front of the monument. You can take a local bus to save the fare.
By the way, my uber driver told me that he could wait for me upto one and half hour for free. I didn’t say yes, because I wasn’t sure how long it would take for me to see. If you are in rush and want to look around only the highlights, you can negotiate the price with your uber or taxi driver. To be honest, seeing the highlights only one hour is enough I would say. I had lunch and coffee there, so it wasn’t my option.
Things to do
There are 17 attractions in Ciudad Mitad del Mundo such as Cocoa square where you can try chocolates and artisan beer museums. Among them, I introduce you some activities that I enjoyed.
Balancing the Egg
In front of the monument, there’s a mini table where you can do the famous egg experiment. I tried to balance the egg on the top of a nail, but it wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Especially, if it winds, it is really hard.
Getting into the Tower
You can enter the building and go up to see the view. Even though I’d already seen the great view from the teleferico(to read the article, click here), it was very impressive. In addition, the artificial town was well-managed so it had more pleasant atmosphere than the old town in Quito.
Also, you can get your passport souvenir stamped here. Actually, they encourage you to get it. However, I don’t recommend it because it is a stamp for non-official purpose, thus your passport can be considered as damaged or faulty one. If you want to get a souvenir stamp, prepare a blank paper or other stuff to be stamped.
Near the entrance of Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, there is the Unasur building. Unasur is like a UN for South American countries. According to the news, the building would be transformed into a university. Still, it seemed quite empty. Though, the building looked gorgeous.
Enjoy your travel with Marimonda. See you soon. 🙂
p.s. I Hope everyone stays safe from Covid-19.
